Every November, I post a blog about gratitude because it’s Thanksgiving and I think that it is a great time to reflect on what we are grateful for.
As we move into the season of gratitude, many of us find ourselves reflecting on the year that’s passed, the progress made, the challenges weathered, and the moments that shaped us. It’s no coincidence that this time of year invites stillness and introspection. It gives us a chance to pause and ask, “What really matters to me right now?”
This Thanksgiving, I want to invite you to consider two powerful forces that can shift not just your mindset, but your career trajectory: gratitude and focus. Individually, they’re transformational. Together, they’re unstoppable.
Why Gratitude Matters for Your Career
Gratitude isn’t just about saying thank you. It’s a mindset, a lens through which you begin to see opportunities, connections, and progress that might otherwise go unnoticed.
When you practice gratitude consistently, something shifts. You start to:
- Notice the people who’ve supported you.
- Appreciate the challenges that shaped you.
- Reconnect with your purpose.
- Celebrate how far you’ve come even if you’re not where you want to be yet.
Gratitude brings you back to the present, anchoring you in what’s working instead of obsessing over what isn’t.
Why Focus Matters for Your Future
Focus is your superpower in a world that constantly demands your attention. It’s easy to get swept up in comparison, distraction, or a never-ending to-do list. Focus brings intentionality back into the driver’s seat of your life and career.
When you’re focused:
- You make decisions aligned with your values.
- You stop chasing every shiny opportunity and start building momentum.
- You reclaim your energy from what drains you and redirect it toward what fuels you.
Focus reminds you that you don’t have to do everything. You just need to do the right things with clarity and consistency.
How Gratitude and Focus Work Together
Gratitude keeps you grounded. Focus moves you forward.
Together, they help you:
- Tune out noise and tune into what matters.
- Make better decisions from a place of abundance, not scarcity.
- Recognize your worth and contributions without overworking to prove them.
- Feel more fulfilled in your career and personal life.
Gratitude opens the heart. Focus sharpens the mind. And when both are in play, you’re aligned with your truest self.
Ten Practical Ways to Cultivate Gratitude and Focus This Season
Want to bring these practices to life? Here are ten actionable ways to integrate gratitude and focus into your daily routine, especially during the holidays:
- Start Your Day with “What’s Working?”
Before checking emails or social media, jot down three things going well in your life or career. - Reflect on Career Wins
List five professional accomplishments from this year. They can be big or small. Celebrate your growth. - Unsubscribe from What No Longer Serves You
That newsletter, obligation, or mindset that drains you? Let it go. Clear space to focus. - Set One Clear Intention Each Week
Not ten. One. Whether it’s a conversation, a habit, or a project. Choose your focus and commit to it. - Send a Thank You Note to a Colleague or Mentor
Acknowledge someone who’s impacted your career. It deepens connection and builds goodwill. - Turn Off Notifications for One Hour Daily
Protect your attention. Give yourself uninterrupted time to think, plan, or create. - Keep a Gratitude Journal by Your Bed
Every night, write down three things you’re thankful for. It rewires your brain toward optimism. - Revisit Your “Why”
Especially when motivation dips, return to your core values and purpose. Why do you do what you do? Or, in the case of one of my clients from last week, perhaps revisit and revise your “Why.” - Give Yourself Credit
We’re quick to criticize ourselves but slow to acknowledge effort. Recognize your resilience and wins. - Be Fully Present During Conversations
Whether it’s with family or a team member, focus your full attention on them. People notice when you’re truly there.

How Gratitude and Focus Showed Up for Me
A few weeks ago, I was sitting at my dining room table with one of my two cats. My boy, Felix, is a black and white Tuxedo cat who is very demanding of my attention. He was sitting there trying to get my attention and I was scrolling on Instagram looking at videos of other Tuxedo cats and their shenanigans.
I finally asked myself, “what am I doing?” I’m sitting here watching videos of cats I don’t know when I have my own boy here who does plenty of shenanigans, and he’s wanting my attention. I put the phone down and began playing with him.
What this experience taught me is that I want to limit my distractions. I want to focus on what is right in front of me and that I am grateful for what I have in front of me. It was time to put the phone down and open my eyes to what is in front of me because I do have everything I want. I don’t need to look outside for fulfillment.

As You Reflect This Thanksgiving…
Ask yourself:
- What am I most grateful for in my career right now?
- Where do I want to direct my focus as the year winds down?
- How can I show up more intentionally in my life and work?
The answers may surprise you. The answers will almost certainly guide your next right step.
This season is a beautiful time to reset. To reflect, release, and realign. Gratitude and focus aren’t just seasonal sentiments; they’re foundational tools for building a career and life that are both successful and fulfilling.
You don’t have to wait for January 1st to start fresh. Begin now.
Remember you are the CEO of your career and life.
